Bitlocker Error – “The system cannot find the file specified”

Bitlocker is a useful tools to protect data by providing encryption for entire hard disk. As long as you are running Windows 7 and above, your computer is able to run this tool even though your windows edition is not Enterprise version. You can also tweak the policy to enable a pin(7-20 digit) or password request before your OS is booting up. Pin or Password is depend on the version on your windows.

But there are times, you try to run this tool and you met some issues and not able to encrypt your hard disk. One of the issue I’m posting here is an error shows “The system cannot find the file specified”. I try to google and look for resolution but I’m unable to find one. This solution is found by my senior technical staff. To resolve this issue is very simple.

1. Open Explorer
2. Go to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery
3. Rename REagent.xml to eg. REagent.old

Try to run bitlocker again to see if the issue is it resolved.

  1. It worked for me too, but then Windows recovery failed and my laptop was garbage until I reinstalled Windows 10 on the re-formatted SSD hard drive.
